Jökulsárlón lagoon provides a beautiful view of the Breiðamerkurjökull ice cap. Large blocks of ice that fall from the glacier can be as big as 30 m (98 ft.) high. The lagoon’s shoreline provides a nice trail that leads from the Diamond Beach all the way to the glacier at the back of the lagoon. Perhaps one of the most stunning aspects of Jökulsárlón is the reflections of the ice that can be seen on days when the wind is calm. These reflections can make it seem as though the gigantic ice chunks are truly larger than life. The icebergs come in different shades of white, blue, and black. The black is from the ash of nearby volcanos that stain the ice giving them a ghastly appearance. The blue is from the way our eyes perceive the light that is able to escape from the pressurized snow and ice. . . . #Jökulsárlón #iceberg #glacier #iceland #landscape #landscapephotography #reflection #ice #lagoon #bluesky #clouds #glacierlagoon #visiticeland #diamondbeach #welivetoexplore #explore #wanderlust #wander #amongthewild #photography #traveller #travelphotography #canon #backpacker #trekking #travelersnotebook #neverstopexploring #aroundtheworld #capture #focus

The Vatnajökull Glacier is the largest glacier in all of Iceland. It has a surface area of 8,100 square kilometers, covering approximately 8% of Iceland. The glacier is home to Iceland’s tallest mountain, Hvannadalshnúkur, which is 2,200 meters tall. Several of the islands most active volcanoes are concealed under the glaciers ice, many of which are overdue for eruption. The glacier boasts over 30 outlet glaciers, which have become popular areas for trekking. In the northern part of Vatnajökull National Park Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss, can be found. In the south, large chunks of the glacier can be witnessed calving in Jökulsárlón before making their way to Diamond Beach. . . . #Vatnajökull #Vatnajökullnationalpark #nationalpark #findyourpark #glacier #iceland #visiticeland #landscape #landscapephotography #clouds #ice #mountains #midnightsun #icecap #welivetoexplore #explore #wanderlust #wander #amongthewild #photography #traveller #travelphotography #canon #backpacker #trekking #travelersnotebook #neverstopexploring #aroundtheworld #capture #focus

Hundafoss, dogs falls, is one of the waterfalls that you pass on the hike up to Svartifoss. The waterfall gets its name from the fact that when the river swells, sometimes dogs from nearby farms float over the edge. Goðafoss, the waterfall of the gods, is one of Iceland’s most grand waterfalls. The water that feeds Goðafoss flows from the Skjálfandafljót river. The waterfall is 12 meters tall and has a width of 30 meters all together. In the year 999, lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official language of Iceland. Modern myths say that afterwards he threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall, which gives the falls the name Goðafoss. . . . #Goðafoss #waterfall #waterfallphotography #iceland #ringroad #longexposure #longexposurephotography #clouds #river #norsemythology #landscape #landscapephotography #myth #visiticeland #welivetoexplore #explore #wanderlust #wander #amongthewild #photography #traveller #travelphotography #canon #backpacker #trekking #travelersnotebook #neverstopexploring #aroundtheworld #capture #focus

Puffins are easily one of the most recognizable birds in all of Iceland. Known for their vibrant beaks and feet, puffins are one of the most numerous birds on the island. In Eastern Iceland, large colonies can be found such as the one in Borgarfjörður. Puffins are thought to be very faithful animals and tend to mate for life. Because of this, colonies can become quite large with some colonies containing up to 200,000 pairs. Puffins are excellent swimmers being able to dive up to 60 meters to catch fish. They are also strong flyers with wing beats of up to 400 beats per minute, which can propel them up to 90 km/h. . . . #puffins #wildlife #wildlifephotography #iceland #easterniceland #bird #birdphotography #vibrant #Borgarfjörður #visiticeland #nature #naturephotography #puffin #birdphoto #welivetoexplore #explore #wanderlust #wander #amongthewild #photography #traveller #travelphotography #canon #backpacker #trekking #travelersnotebook #neverstopexploring #aroundtheworld #capture #focus

The FÖNIX 01 boat rests near the Dalvík harbor in the North of Iceland. Dalvík, an Icelandic fishing village, is nestled into the western shore of Eyjafjörður. It is the main village of the municipality of Dalvíkurbyggð with a population of approximately 1,400 people. During the summer boats like the FÖNIX 01 may be used for fishing, the primary economy of the village, or whale watching which is the main draw for tourists. The fjord is home to several species of whale including bottlenose, mink, and humpback. In August the Fiskidagurinn mikli is a great chance to experience the fishing culture with a free fish buffet that is sponsored by the local fishing community. The festival draws 30,000 people annually to the village. Despite the small size of the village, Dalvík has had four different representatives at the Eurovision Song Contest. Dalvík’s harbor is an important one for the region. trying2travel365. Hallgrímskirkja is perhaps the most recognizable landmark in Reykjavik

Hallgrímskirkja is perhaps the most recognizable landmark in Reykjavik. The Lutheran church was named after the Icelandic poet and clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson, who was the author of the Passion Hymns.⠀ ⠀ The church stands 74.5 meters (244 ft.) high, making it the largest church in all of Iceland. Construction took 41 years to complete, starting in 1945 and ending in 1986. Originally intended to be smaller, the size was increased in order to be taller than Landakotskirkja, the center of Catholicism in Iceland. ⠀ ⠀ State Architect Guðjón Samúelsson stated that the church was designed in order to resemble the trap rocks, mountains, and glaciers of Iceland’s landscape. When construction was underway, the church was met with criticism saying that the building was too old-fashioned and was a blend of architectural styles. Today it is a symbol of Reykjavik. ⠀ ⠀ In front of the church stands a statue of the Icelandic explorer and adventurer Leif Erikson. The statue, by Alexander Stirling Calder, predates the construction of the church. It was a gift from the United States in honor of the 1930 Althing Millennial Festival, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of Iceland's parliament at Þingvellir in 930 AD. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #Hallgrímskirkja #church #iceland #reykjavik #landmark #architecture #architecturephotography #lieferikson #statue #lutheranchurch #clouds #sunburst #bluesky #visiticeland #welivetoexplore #explore #wanderlust #wander #amongthewild #photography #traveller #travelphotography #canon #backpacker #trekking #travelersnotebook #neverstopexploring #aroundtheworld #capture #focus

trying2travel365. Dettifoss is a testament to the both the immense power of a waterfall

Dettifoss is a testament to the both the immense power of a waterfall and the beauty of Iceland. This waterfall is considered to be the most powerful waterfall not just in Iceland, but in all of Europe. The falls span 100 meters (330 ft.) and fall 44 meters (144 ft.). The average water flow of Dettifoss is 193 m³/s. There are two different areas to view the falls. One is to to the bottom of the trail where a view of the plummeting water can be seen. The other view is at the top of the trail where you view the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river that feeds the waterfall and get a sense of the immense power of the falls as the water rushes over the edge into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. Dettifoss has such an enormous water flow that at the bottom of the trail there is a constant cloud of precipitation that rises from the falls. Most of the time a rainbow can be seen and if you’re patient enough a double rainbow can appear over the falls. Dettifoss’ claim to be the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe is only challenged by Sarpefossen in Norway. The Norwegian falls have a greater average water flow but is only half the height of Dettifoss . . . #dettifoss #dettifosswaterfall #waterfall #waterfallphotography #iceland #ringroad #landscape #landscapephotography #river #clouds #hiking #longexposure #longexposurephotography #visiticeland #welivetoexplore #explore #wanderlust #wander #amongthewild #photography #traveller #travelphotography #canon #backpacker #trekking #travelersnotebook #neverstopexploring #aroundtheworld #capture #focus

Kirkjufell, Church Mountain, is the most recognizable mountain in all of Iceland. Found on the Snæfellsness Peninsula, the 463 m tall mountain was the shooting location for Arrowhead Mountain in Game of Thrones. The trail nearby leads visitors past the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls (literally Kirkjufells waterfall) and to the viewing spot where most photos are taken. The combined beauty of the waterfalls and the mountain have a lead to this being considered the most photographed mountain and all of Iceland. The climb to the top of the mountain can be quite dangerous as the last couple of meters are all freehand climbing and several people have lost their lives over the past few years trying to climb to the top. Svartifoss, the Black Falls, is found in Vatnajökull National Park and is one of the most popular sites for visitors. The waterfall is 20 meters (80 ft.) tall and feeds into a winding river which then feeds three other waterfalls that you pass on the hike to Svartifoss. Svartifoss is fed by the Svinafellsjokull glacier and is surrounded on all sides by basalt columns. These types of columns can be found in other parts of Iceland but are also well-known for making up the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland and Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. The basalt columns that are found here were the inspiration for Hallgrímskirkja, the famous Lutheran church in Reykjavik. The base of the waterfall is known for it’s sharp rocks which are caused from the sections of columns that break off faster than the water can erode the edges. To reach Svartifoss, there is a 1.5 km hike from the visitor center that is fairly easy for anyone not carrying a 30 lb camera bag. However, the day we were there the last part of the trail was closed but the whole trail is filled with amazing views of the basalt columns, the river, and the other waterfalls. Even if you can’t make it all the way to Svartifoss, it is still an incredible hike. . . . #svartifoss #iceland #landscape #landscapephotography #waterfall #waterfallphotography #river #basaltcolumns #hiking #longexposure #longexposurephotography #clouds #nationalpark #findyourpark #welivetoexplore #explore #wanderlust #wander #amongthewild #photography #traveller #travelphotography #canon #backpacker #trekking #travelersnotebook #neverstopexploring #aroundtheworld #capture #focus

Gljúfrafoss, or Gljúfrabúi, is one of Iceland’s hidden waterfalls. It’s name translates to “one who lives in the canyon.” This particular waterfall can be found on Iceland’s Golden Circle but is often overshadowed by it’s neighbor Seljalandsfoss. Although Seljalandsfoss is a much larger waterfall, Gljúfrafoss is a much more unique waterfall to me. Iceland is full of large waterfalls but Gljúfrafoss gives visitors a chance at a different experience. The waterfall is hidden in the cliffs and you have to walk through the cliff walls along a small path to get to the waterfalls chamber. It’s a great opportunity to experience the power of a waterfall as the whole chamber is filled with spray from the falls. There is no chance of coming out dry. Every viewpoint of this waterfall is both beautiful and unique. Even though you’re just a few feet from the main road, standing in the falls chamber gives you a feel of being in a more magical world.

Jökulsárlón, the glacial river lagoon, is without doubt one of the most amazing spots in Iceland. The lagoon sits at the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and leads directly into the Atlantic Ocean. Throughout the summer, large chunks of ice melt and fall from the glacier into the lagoon and make their way to the ocean where they are then pushed back onto the shore of the black sand beach, which has led to the name Diamond Beach. The lagoon was formed between 1934-35 and has expanded to have a surface area of 18 sq km (6.9 sq miles). It is 200 m (660 feet) deep at the site of the original glacier snout and has a maximum depth of 248 metres (814 feet). The Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, which feeds the lagoon, is 910 m (3,000 feet) y’all. Today, you can take a boat tour of the lake or watch as the icebergs move from the lagoon to the ocean.
